ABOUT ME

I am a representational painter based in Auckland. I work along traditional avenues, exploring nostalgic New Zealand scenes but in a a fresh and intimate way. I am strongly drawn to imagery that not only reminds me of my childhood, but also hints to a broader narrative beyond the frame.

New Zealand architecture is a frequent muse of mine; using traditional techniques, the details, materials and proportions are rendered with precision, giving appreciation to their historical craftsmanship. While this classes my work as realist, it is really the place's feeling that I seek to capture.

I am also experienced in portraiture and enjoy capturing a person at a special moment in time to create a treasured family heirloom.

Despite loving art since childhood and studying it throughout high school, I was a lawyer for 13 years before turning to a career in Art. I see my paintings as a fusion of my analytical and intuitive sides.

Working primarily in oils on canvas, my work is held in collections throughout New Zealand and overseas. I have been a finalist in several national art awards and in 2021 was the recipient of the Michael Evans Figurative Award at the Walker & Hall Art Awards.

Portraiture

I have always been drawn to portraiture and the challenge of capturing not only a physical likeness, but something of the subject’s essential character.

I also have fine art prints available. Selected prints are also stocked at Next Door Gallery (Birkenhead) and MorArt (Milford & Queenstown).
