Neighbourhood

I am so excited to tell you about my next exhibition at Turua Gallery in Auckland. Neighbourhood is exactly what the title suggests - a celebration of the Gallery’s local neighbourhood and the beautiful waterfront of Auckland’s Eastern Bays. I will have three new originals in the show: Tickled Pink (below); No Place I’d Rather Be (feature image, top) and View from the Green (you’ll have to wait ‘til closer to the time, or come to the show, to see this one). I would love you to join me at the opening and take a closer look at these highly detailed pieces that really need to be seen in person to be appreciated.
Tickled Pink captures the iconic Art Deco house in Mission Bay which is one of the first landmarks I associated with Tamaki Drive. As a kid, I remember looking out for it on Sunday drives around the waterfront: an inspiring spot of pink cheer on an otherwise tedious family outing. Sadly it’s no longer pink but I’ll always remember it in it’s original glory.
My paintings often start this way - coming across a place that sparks a memory and the feeling of nostalgia. I will photograph it and extract those elements I like while altering the surroundings to create the feeling that I’m trying to express. Although precise and highly detailed, my work is never about fully replicating a view with one hundred percent accuracy, it’s about creating the feeling I felt while being there.
